Nostalgia & History > Switching at Sherman (Texas)Date: 11/22/12 20:37 Switching at Sherman (Texas) Author: railstiesballast First is a unique Katy pair, both only found on the MKT, hope someone can fill in the details. We are looking north on Jan. 24, 1983.
Second is the SP facility, a classic GP-9 between a weathered old wood building and a new metal one, on June 30th of 1983. I've started scanning what was left in the developer's boxes, after picking the best for collections. These are interesting everyday scenes, now almost historic, but not documents of locomotive details or "art". Date: 11/22/12 20:58 Re: Switching at Sherman (Texas) Author: tomstp First picture. Are you sure this is Sherman, Tx? I didn't think the Katy went to Sherman. They did go to Denison and had a yard there.
Date: 11/22/12 21:24 Re: Switching at Sherman (Texas) Author: railstiesballast Denison? Yep, a quick look at GoogleEarth confirms it, and makes me think the other one was Denison also (but those buildings appear to be gone).
I was just copying the notes on the slide from (OMG!) 29 years ago. Thanks for the correction. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/22/12 21:29 by railstiesballast. Date: 11/23/12 03:24 Re: Switching at Sherman (Texas) Author: sp7878 The Katy did serve Sherman Texas.
Date: 11/23/12 06:59 Re: Switching at Sherman (Texas) Author: WrongWayMurphy The Katy did have a dead-end 10 mile branch from Denison to Sherman, but this photo is indeed at Denison.
The land to the right of train and behind photographer was the old original Katy yard and shops before the facility at Ray was built. Today just a single track exists where the train is in the photo. Engine is one of those Morphodites, and RS3 converted by EMD with 567C power, retaining the RS short hood and replacing the long hood with a GP18 varriety. The "caboose" was originally a standard steel cabooses, converted by the Denison shops for yard and transfer service. Basically the only thing used from the original caboose was the frame and one end of the hack. It was built with footboards but those were removed in the 70's at the request of the FRA. Second photo is Sherman and that trackage still in place, . Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 11/23/12 07:07 by ArgyleEagle. Date: 11/23/12 18:19 Re: Switching at Sherman (Texas) Author: Evan_Werkema Katy's RS-3's with GP9 hoods are probably the best known examples because they lasted the longest and one or two still exist, but they weren't unique. Rock Island and Frisco had some similarly morphodized RS-2's:
