Admittedly, Amtrak's version of it. I don't remember exactly when I took this trip, probably in 1974. The slides I scanned were processed by someone who didn't imprint the date on the slide. Amazing how long this train used to be. Four E-units on the point and lots of coachs and sleepers. The first three are headed east toward the curve.

A nice series of pictures!

I'm guessing that they were taken in the 1977 - 1979 period. Initially, E-units were assigned to the Broadway in the Phase I. In 1974 - 1976, the SPP40Fs were typical power. In 1977, the E-units returned to their position of glory. By then, some of Amtrak's E-units sported the Phase II scheme shown in your photos.

Looks like an Amcafe up front ahead of the sleeper.

I did take a trip east in September of 1976. These pictures could be from then. I'll post some more from this trip later. I've got some nice shots of approaching Harrisburg and picking up a GG1 for the trip on into Philadelphia.

illusion, thought the same thing, believe the vestibule and the curve is responsible, with that window pattern and the car almost looks round, but i think is p/s car like the chessie type cars

during a heavy driving snow storm of '78 i was at Overbrook in more a foot of snow and along came the eb Broadway around the curve with 4 E's on the point plowing through the white stuff ... ooohh the memories stuck in my brain which is all i have to record the event ... too dumb and too proud as a railroader to carry a camera ... if only hindsight could turn into foresight

Beautiful shots! Nothing like riding the dutch door! #3 captures the essence of this experience for me. Thanks for posting.

The first two shots are about 3 miles east of Johnstown and C tower.

I took the National Limited in Nov or Dec of 1972. This was right after the Amtrak takeover. It went from DC to Baltimore, then up the Port Road to Harrisburg. Where we switched to diesels and coupled to the New York section.

Looking out the dutch doors on the Susquehanna bridge was a bit scary. Looking and seeing a straight drop down! When we got to Horseshoe curve, they encouraged everyone to look out the dutch door windows. It was an awesome sight to see both ends of the train at once.

What ever happened to that pennsy steam engine?

Isn't it the one in laying in parts at Steamtown? As I recall they intended to restore it to running condition and either ran out of money or found problems that couldn't be overcome.

Thats a K4 They did have it running on the Bald Eagle Branch a number of years ago but don't know if its still running or not today. Perhaps somebody else here could give an update on it.
