I moved to LA too late to see any of the Hollywood Branch (later Beverly Hills Branch), but much of the track was still in place when I got here. Love seeing pics like this, to see what I missed.

One night back in 1967 or thereabouts, I went to the Electric Railway Historical Assn. meeting (held at a Cal Fed building on Wilshire Blvd.) and afterward went up to West Hollywood to seek the "legendary midnight switcher". I found it on Santa Monica Blvd., and fortunately had my camera loaded with Kodak Tri-X (really fast B&W film) and got a photo of, as I recall, 1011. The crew had finished with their work, so I followed the SW-1, running light through Beverly Hills. Between the PE air whistle and the four-axle unit running downhill on old jointed rail, it was about as close as one could get to hearing the ghost of the old Red Cars.

I was surprised to see photos of SW-1500's working the remnant of the Western District. Were they required to have PE whistles like the older units?

I think you are right, Bob. I will have to look through my old timeslips and see if was out there. I am almost positive it was.

As I remember 1176 was the unit used for some time, but hell the SP guys on this list were
almost old enough to vote back then.
