Latter-day "Chief" on Warbonnet Wednesday
Author: Alco251

The proposed-but-never-started "Rail Cycle" project of the early 90s--to take LA County's solid waste by train to a desert landfill near Bolo on the AT&SF Needles District--produced a number of picturesque passenger specials carrying railway and government officials to inspect the route and the proposed landfill site. Here's one of the last ones, if I recall, well into the "Super Fleet" era, when brand new B40-8Ws from GE and GP60Ms from EMD took center stage and relegated the classic FP45s to backstage duty. ATSF 509 and another spiffy B-40-8W lead a six-car consist up the North Track of Cajon Pass, just past the Highway 138 bridge, on a sunny morning, September 13, 1993. We called these specials "Trash Trains" but the photograph clearly shows they were anything but.

Great Catch! Only thing that would improve your shot is a SP unit roasting like a marshmallow on the Colton Cutoff...kidding, Steve
