Most railroads, at least the healthy ones, in steam days had good track. Section men were proud of the section they kept up. There was not any of today's "whip it up in shape and walk off and leave it for 6 months".

Fascinating shot. I too noticed the groomed right-of-way. Seems the signals are stop in both directions. Check the old-time cylinders on the engine in the foreground but with the "modern" steel doghouse for the hapless head brakeman.

Passing track runs out at the front of the 4024, the 807 is switching some small yard and there's a crossover from that track to the main.
Yes, it is a Sinclair tank car.
