Back when people weren't embarassed or afraid to advertize their businesses, and even do so at night, with lighted (neon) signs. Even something as simple as a cafe could have a fairly impressive sign, that didn't look exactly like the sign on the store next door, and every other store down the street.

I think zoning codes have a lot to do with what you see currently.
