First Gen.Power on the C&O in 1975
Author: aehouse

First generation Geeps still abounded on the C&O main line in West Virginia in October, 1975.

First up is an eastbound 90-series manifest at White Sulphur Springs.

Next, an eastbound coal train waits at Quinnimont to head out towards Newport News.

This is how I remember the C&O in 1965 and 1967 while stationed at Ft. Eustis; endless strings of coal trains all powered by blue geeps. There was also the RDC car that operated between Main Street Station in Richmond and Newport News. I rode this train frequently on week-end passes to Richmond (had a girlfriend at RPI), boarding at Lee Hall, and remember it pulling a heavyweight baggage car.

Nice reminder of when when you could hear a distinct prime mover(s) from miles away.

That's also how I remember the C&O in the late 50s to mid 60s and along the C&Os Columbus-Toledo mainline in Columbus Ohio. Geeps Geeps and more Geeps. F units too.
