Conneaut, OH - B&LE "Hogback Curve"
Author: NKP715

A recent donation to the Conneaut RR Museum was this
photo dated "circa 1914" of a Bessemer & Lake Erie
southbound on the "Hogback Curve" in Conneaut.
Power was two 2-8-0's, 152 leading and 117 pushing.

There were thirty-four cars plus a caboose between
the locomotives.

This view complements another very similar photo
we have, taken six years later after the 2-10-2's
were placed in service. In that shot, only the
lead locomotive is visible. With the heavier power,
the trains were longer, and by that time, larger
cars were in service.

Is there a similar shot from today at that location?

There is no way that this area is not covered in trees now.

This is what it looked like on
Mar 13, 1965, with 727 and 803.

Back in 2000, the "Northern Express" train of PVs ran PHL to Erie, overnighted in the OD yard, then ran down the Conrail main line to the connection to the B&LE and down to the Conneaut ore docks via the "Hogback Curve". We then changed ends and ran down Bessemer to Homestead via BLE and URR. We then doubled back to Butler, laid up overnight in the "Pipe Yard", then ran B&P and Mountain Laurel to Driftwood, thence back to PHL via the Northern Central. Great trip!
