Amtrak's Arrowhead w/E's, Minneapolis July 1977
Author: valmont

These coming and going shots were taken by Bruce Black on July 2, 1977 @ Minneapolis

He labeled the slides as 'Amtrak 411/332 Tr760 The Arrowhead'

Former "Lewis & Clark" Travelers Rest from the "Vista Dome North Coast Limited" bringing up the rear!

Nice! Thanks.

That's a fairly large consist.

How was this train routed through the Twin Cities?

Thanks for posting.

King_Coal & Out-Of-Service have questions I do not have the answers to (I'm assuming they mean the Amtrak pics) as I didn't take those pics and am not very familiar with the Twin Cities. I'm sure someone can help ....

Photo taken right at the south end of Northtown Yard, just south of the Soo Line overpass. The northbound Arrowhead is coming off the ex-NP passenger main from the GN station (now long gone) in Minneapolis.

Best regards,

Rob L.

Thanks for the update. Checked Historic Aerials to figure this out, and now see how this route connected to downtown Minneapolis. A lot has changed! Love the photo.

Thats a great catch in more ways than one. Amtrak E8As in phase II stripes and portholes were rare birds.

Vince, Rob is correct. The vantage point is the
St. Anthony Parkway Bridge, still a good spot to
shoot, witness MILW86A's shot. This was the
route of the "North Coast Limited" and the
"Mainstreeter" in pre-Amtrak days. This train
would be the short-lived Twin Cities-Duluth
train, state sponsored.

Thanks Nick, I have some other passenger shots that Bruce took in the TC, it was a favorite place for him to visit to get pictures. I'll be posting some some in the future.

Interesting photos. Did the Amtrak's Empire Builder use this route to get out of town or did they use the great northern's mainline to minneapolis junction and then northwest?? TIA dave, out.

At this time the Empire Builder still ran west on former GN tracks. Not at this location.
