Nostalgia & History > 20 years ago on Raton PassDate: 09/28/13 07:14 20 years ago on Raton Pass Author: Super_C It is hard to believe that the past 20 years have gone by so quickly. It seems like it was only recently that I took these shots of Santa Fe's 198 train. The date was April 19, 1993.
When the 198 arrived in Trinidad, CO, a pair of new GE C40-8W units were waiting to power the rear half of the train over Raton Pass. GP60M #125 was the lead unit coming into town. Once the train was cut in half, the pair of GEs, led by #879, was coupled to the "second section". Because there was no opposing eastbound traffic coming over the mountain, the DS routed the first section, led by #125, up #1 track while the second section was routed up #2 track. The first picture shows the first section about to enter the east portal of Raton Tunnel at Wootton, CO. The second picture shows the second section at the same location. The train has been reassembled at Raton and is off to the races leaving town on the Las Vegas Subdivision in picture #3. Those were fine times, indeed!
