Nostalgia & History > B&O before the kittenDate: 11/17/13 09:48 B&O before the kitten Author: FT I did get to shoot some B&O in the "blue" days, but these are by other photographers.
1 3403 and two more geeps are at Baltimore on an unusual assignment. Robert Robl noted on the slide that they were moving a Pennsy train, with a GG1, around a wreck that had the juice off in that area. Wish the PRR train was more visible. Down below I see some Pennsy E's and geeps at a shop area. 6-64 by Robert Robl 2 3723 at Sandpatch area. The skiff of snow is perfect to set off the dark units. The position signals add much to a painting like scene. 11-25-78 by John Held 3 6565 and 6442 at M&K Jct, WV. Never having been there, I can only guess these are helpers. The hopper looks empty, so this must be a heavy grade to need the geeps. 6-64 by Robert Robl One of so many roads and paint schemes gone with the wind. Date: 11/17/13 11:36 Re: B&O before the kitten Author: RNinRVR I can remember riding SAL 22 from Richmond to New York in the 60's when the line from Washington to Baltimore was closed due to a wreck. We had 2 of the Washington Terminal RS's pull us up the B&O, thought the Howard St. tunnel and then onto the PRR where the interchange is north of the station and back us down the tunnel into the station.

Date: 11/17/13 12:19 Re: B&O before the kitten Author: JimBaker I am a western fellow. and was surprised by the Yellow 'X' on the bypass train.
What era was this scheme used? Jim Baker, Whittier, CA Date: 11/17/13 12:21 Re: B&O before the kitten Author: FT That is the "sunburst" scheme. Many units had it.

Thomas eckhardt Date: 11/17/13 20:00 Re: B&O before the kitten Author: gobbl3gook Cool -- I'd never seen the sunburst scheme before either. Looks like a lot of variation in how it was applied. There's a good representation on the google image search. https://www.google.com/search?safe=off&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1836&bih=950&q=%22B%26O%22+sunburst&oq=%22B%26O%22+sunburst&gs_l=img.3...125.4774.0.5086.16.9.0.7.0.0.172.624.8j1.9.0....0...1ac.1.31.img..9.7.405.nkWP-_LCtNw

The roundhouse was located on Kresson St. between Pulaski Hwy. and Lombard St. The water tower, now gone, and the smokestack are located at the then Baltimore City Hospital. http://www.historicaerials.com/api/img-server.php?op=fetchHistoricPhotograph&bbox=-76.5612523150223,39.298529938351,-76.5572276136354,39.2945052369641&year=1971&stamp=true BaltoJoey Date: 11/18/13 07:26 Re: B&O before the kitten Author: aehouse FT Wrote:

There are heavy grades in both directions out of Rowlesburg, as the B&O descends into the valley of the Cheat River, crosses the river there, and then immediately departs the valley both eastbound and westbound. But appearance of the empty coal hoppers is a bit of a mystery, as almost all B&O-originated coal came from nines west of Rowlesburg. That's an eastbound train, and hence, one would expect it to be loaded. Another possibility is that it was a train that had handled a different commodity westbound, such as iron ore or limestone, and was now returning east. Art House Gettysburg, Pa. > Edited 1 time(s). You should have been rising backwards after hte Baltimore interchange.
