Nostalgia & History > UP and SP at Brooklyn, 1947Date: 05/31/14 05:10 UP and SP at Brooklyn, 1947 Author: donstrack Is this photo at SP's Brooklyn roundhouse in Portland, Oregon? (That is the tender of SP 4484 inside.)
Why would there be a UP 2-10-2 at Brooklyn? Would a 2-10-2 have been used on a transfer between yards, since Brooklyn (SP) is a little over 4 miles from Albina (UP). UP 5510, at Portland, September 2, 1947. Don Roberts photo; Dave England Collection. Don Strack Date: 05/31/14 06:05 Re: UP and SP at Brooklyn, 1947 Author: E25 Good eye... yes, it's definitely Brooklyn Yard.
The UP #5510 is seen facing away from Albina, so it would fit with your theory that it was on a transfer run and is about to be turned on the Brooklyn turntable for the return trip to Albina. -- Greg Edited 2 time(s). Locomotive 4484, an ex Cotton Belt 4-8-4, wasn't on the roster in 1947, and the shape of the tender is characteristically a GS1 thru GS6 Date: 05/31/14 16:44 Re: UP and SP at Brooklyn, 1947 Author: donstrack BCHellman Wrote:

Don Strack Date: 06/01/14 00:55 Re: UP and SP at Brooklyn, 1947 Author: funnelfan SP leased a number of UP engines in the post war timeframe to handle traffic surges until it could acquire enough new diesel locomotives to hand the surge in lumber traffic out of the northwest. The book SP in Oregon has a few photos of leased UP engines working between Portland and Eugene.

It is unknown however if they all got the S P trademark silver smokebox front. Leased U P power included Mikados, 3500 class 2-8-8-0s, 3800 class Challengers, thirty-two 2-10-2s and a single 4-10-2. Believe it or not, they also leased five of the ex C & O coal burning 2-8-8-2 U P War Babies that were sent to El Paso for two months in July and August 1946. The 4464 was assigned to the Western Division at this time.

Yes it was, between July 28, 1947 and January 5, 1948 and again from June 30, 1948 to July 29, 1948. GM |
