Wow, what was the cause? I don't think that is (was) necessarily high speed running territory since Austin Street appears to be by the old SP diesel shops. Looking at the front of the SP F-unit did it hit another train with a glancing blow?

I have asked about this derailment for a few years here on TO's. No one seemed to know about it till now, thank you for posting this.
I remember going to see this with my Dad, we got to walk right up to the unit that was on the street. I couldn't imagine doing that now.

I can imagine the owner of the automobile trying to explain to his wife when he gets home, his the car was hit by a train. "But honey, I didn't park anywhere near the tracks".

That's the Tower of the Americas in the distance. It's actually taller than the Space Needle.

Is that a 52 Chevy? and the car was 18 years old at that time...Looking at the STP sticker on the side it could have a teens car...

I think the Chevy is either a 1953 or 54. I can't make out the tail lights to be sure.

The 6455 was repaired using a chunk cut from the left side nose of retired F-7A 6432, the final freight F on the SP. I believe the cut and splice was performed at Sacramento. By September 1973, the remains of the 6432 had been delivered to Schnitzer Steel in Oakland for scrap.

Would it not have been unusual for the B unit to have been a Union Pacific loke?

This looks like a FP-7A lead unit coupled to a E8B trailing, correct me if I'm wrong.
