The way I read the caption, this was a regular (summer) car on The Cascade which began running between Oakland and Portland in 1927 after the opening of the Cascade Line between Black Butte and Springfield, OR. The car had relatively high sides. (Check out the signals.)

Ridding through the many tunnels must have been an experience particularly going up grade.

But what's to stop passengers from getting a foreign object in their eye? What about rock throwers? Oh, the humanity!

Why do I now have to ride steam excursions where all the Dutch doors must remain closed at all times?

How can this be?

Because hogging an open dutch door to yourself isn't fair to the other passengers. (GD&R)

That car amazed me as a kid, I saw a picture of it in one of my train books and never forgot about it. Many years of my childhood were spent trying to find an HO scale model of that car, thank you for bringing back those memories this morning. :)
