Watch Out For Gators
Author: GrandeGold

The Utah Railway has historically rostered interesting if not unusual diesel locomotives. They acquired a quartet of RSD-15 'alligators' from the Santa Fe in 1975. The UTAH 402, 401, 400, 403 and RSD-12 600 pull a train of UP coal empties east through Spanish Fork Canyon on Feb. 19, 1977.

The fifty "Alligators" were the last Alco power bought by Santa Fe. SP got some of the "Century" series units, but Santa Fe was strictly EMD and GE after 1960. I once had a chat with the night shop supervisor at San Bernardino back around 1970. He knew I was a railfan, and commented, "I don't see why your buddies think the Alcos are such a big deal. They're crap! Give me an EMD any day." Among other things, he helped engineer the conversion of F-units to CF-7s
