Nostalgia & History > Some Interesting and Odd Old StreetcarsDate: 08/27/14 16:16 Some Interesting and Odd Old Streetcars Author: MartyBernard These five photos and captions are from the Oregon Historical Society's Photograph Collection.
The streetcar in Photo 1 seems to be powered by a gasoline engine. Horses, steam engines, cables, and electricity were the normal motive power. The conductor and motorman were posed. 1. COLUMBIA & NEHALEM RIVER R.R. STREETCAR, BUILT (AND PHOTOGRAPHED) IN PORTLAND [Graphic], 00/00/0000 Call Number: 003123 Database: OCLC-MARC Bibliographic (OCLC) 2. FLOAT ON ELECTRIC STREETCAR IN SAN FRANCISCO MODELED AFTER USS OREGON, PROMOTION TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR SHIP. [Graphic], 00/00/1913 Call Number: 003024 Database: OCLC-MARC Bibliographic (OCLC) I find it interesting that the streetcar in Picture 3 was owned by the land developer and not a streetcar company. Certainly streetcars supported the development of the outer reaches of cities especially where the streets were impassible due to weather much of the year. The streetcar lines ran from these new residential areas to downtown offices and stores, industrial areas, and city and amusement parks. 3. FIRST STREETCAR IN VANCOUVER, WA, OWNED BY COLUMBIA LAND & IMPROVEMENT CO [Graphic], 00/00/1893 Call Number: ORHI1003 Database: OCLC-MARC Bibliographic (OCLC) continued ... Edited 3 time(s). It's a wooden roof with wooden struts. The picture was taken the first day of service from the barn in Portland, OR.
4. STREETCAR EMPLOYEES AT EAST ANKENY CARBARN. [Graphic], 10/12/1910 Call Number: 020944 Database: OCLC-MARC Bibliographic (OCLC) Photo 5 shows a typical 1890s horse car. This one was in Portland, OR. [See comments below that this was actually in Albany, OR.] 5. STREETCAR PULLED BY TWO HORSES W/SIGN ON SIDE ADVERTISING STERNBERG'S CLOTHING.
