Nostalgia & History > UP COLA at Summit, CADate: 09/09/14 23:16 UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: RplusLJetService Only info on the slide is the date: December of 1963. Based on that time of year, the time of day looks right for this to be the City of LA westbound at what is now Martinez Spur.
Adam Date: 09/10/14 00:18 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: rob_l Looks like the sleeping car section with the dome diner and the dome lounge, and a separate coach section was operated. At that time, the coach section probably included a Milwaukee Road super dome and a UP dome coach.
Best regards, Rob L. Date: 09/10/14 06:21 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: 3rdswitch Great look back.

Uncle Joe,Seffner,fl. Date: 09/10/14 11:10 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: coach When this climbed and descended Cima Hill, what were the allowed speed limits for it?
Date: 09/10/14 11:24 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: 41 Hmmm, there is no train no in the number board. Thought UP didn't do away train nos in the board until late 1960s.
Date: 09/10/14 11:30 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: The_Chief_Way train numbers were not displayed when running on the ATSF as pictured here

Which would make sense, as Rob pointed out, this train appears to be only the First Class part of the COLA. The coach or "Challenger" section would be following, usually with 10-15 minutes behind. Great image to look back on! KC Date: 09/10/14 11:41 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: MyfordBrowning retcsxcfm Wrote:

The Santa Fe still required green Flags to the mid 1960s on trains with following sections. The use of white flags for extra train was discontinued earlier. In 1961 streamliners with dynamic could do 45 mph down the 2.2%. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/11/14 17:33 by timz. Date: 09/10/14 16:24 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: BuddPullman How did the 928 go from being beautifully painted loco on display at the Western Heritage Museum (back in the 80's?) to a hulk car body at Cheyenne? What did I miss?
Date: 09/10/14 19:08 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: The_Chief_Way that's a long, sad story that I don't think I can repeat here, since I don't have all the details
maybe Bob K. could fill in the cracks Date: 09/10/14 23:58 Re: UP COLA at Summit, CA Author: Splitrock323 Great picture, thanks for posting.
Anyone have pictures of a Milwaukee Great dome going to Los Angeles?
