The sign says that is was built for the Soviets in '47/'48 then operated by the Milwaukee in '50. Did it ever go to the USSR? 2-3 years of operation just to come back seems like a big waste.
Thanks!
Rob

No, I don't think the Joes ever left the USA, except for the ones that went to Brazil.
Nice displays; where are all of Montana's graffiti "artists?"

The "iittle joes" have never make it to the USSR. Some went to the CMStP&P, 3 to the CSS&SB, and a few to South America. Check the book of Milw, electrics by Noel Holley. wag216

The catenary is a nice touch. They have added that since the last time I was through there.

Except they hung it upside down.

Best regards,

Upside down, only a single copper wire, all the hangers the same length, not stretched, etc.

A nice display not suitable for historical research.

The Joes never went to Russia. They were built to 5' gauge so they had to be reqauged to 4'8 1/2" to run in the US. GE did that to one unit GE 750 to use as a demonstrator, the MILW and South Shore did the rest. The traction motors under the Joes were GE 750 type.

No, if they had ever made it over there, they would NOT have come back. General Joe tended to have rather sticky fingers when bits of advanced technology fell into his hands one way or another. In this case it would have even been legal to hold onto it, assuming that he didn't stop payments (which was not beyond him).

Generally when he got something fancy he sent it off to his engineers and scientists and told them "make me 200 just like this only better". If he had gotten them, it might have changed the entire face of East European railroading!
