I don't chase steam anymore in Southern California, because ALL WE HAVE is 3751, which is ALWAYS PUSHED around the south land by a pack of diesels. It is INFINITELY more exciting to watch a video of NPR 765, in all her glorious STEAM POWERED fury, than to sit three feet from the rails when 3751 is pushed along.
3751 might as well be a museum piece. The SBRHS powers that be virtually never work her. It's like she is in a rest home for the aged and they never take her anywhere without her walker. When 765 is run by the boys in Ft. Wayne, by God, she is RUN, so that anyone within a thousand yards knows that "something VERY wicked this way comes!" I would drive 3,000 miles to see a big steam loco like 765 roar and shake the earth, but I won't drive the 15 minutes from my home to watch 3751 literally COAST through Irvine again. No sir, 3751, the way the folks from Sanberdoo "run" her, is BORING!

Actually I would like to see the boys at Fairplex, 3751, and the SP Atlantic at Traveltown all in one location, with rail access to run. As for the 3751 not working hard, I will agree, as last time I saw her running to San Diego, yes she was just cruising.

3751 is pretty much landlocked. UP won't let her on their tracks because she's not UP and BNSF seems to have lost interest in her.
So she's stuck running on Metrolink and the Coaster to San Diego and San Bernardino.
Personally I'm just happy that she runs and seems to be in good shape.

No kidding!

Might as well put her back in the park in San Berdo if they aren't going to run her solo or with a matching set of Santa Fe heavyweights.

Great shots, JB. Really like your second image of the 3751 on the Santa Fe special.

Streamliner, evidently you were not aboard during the first Grand Canyon visit by 3751 after restoration, in 2002 at the NRHS Convention In Williams, AZ. Somewhere in the video archives on this site I have a video of 3751 storming up from the south rim through the Coconino forest, and she is working hard, great stack talk. The SBRHS is to be commended for the patience they have in dealing with operations in the LA area. We can hope that someday she might join ATSF 2926 in Albuquerque, where they can doublehead and not be confined to LA rules.

If you do a search on here for 3751 Streamliner usually has a post somewhere in it with the same tired and off base argument about 3751. He is pretty much a broken record

Well, if you're going to have to go all the way back to 2002 to come up with a decent example of 3751 actually WORKING, then you are making my point for me. And, if we are talking ancient history, I can vividly remember 4449 coming through Los Angeles, with Doyle at the throttle, with BILLOWING CLOUDS blowing from her stack, a bark that sent children running to their mothers and the ground under my feet feeling as though the San Andreas Fault was on the move. When 3751 comes through L.A., all you hear is the whine of a diesel, all you see is a bit of steam from her whistle and all you feel is like "I wasted all day waiting for THIS?" There's more real steam action at Knott's Berry Farm--and at least there, the train runs on time, and there's boysenberry pie!

Thanks for always bringing great shots to this forum that show what it's about .... Nostalgia & History. Your continued documentation of those two aspects keep us coming back.

I doubt she's not working at all, especially since the whine of the diesel is for the HEP and she's not climbing too many steep grades anyway, anyone got the 2 videos when she worked to San Diego by Pentrex with the Amtrak P42 on the rear, but she's the one doing most of the work! I'm fed up with the crybabies myself when it comes to a steam excursion which has to have a diesel myself, just be happy you got a steam excursion to go and see for crying out loud!

Oh really? Witness these shots in St Louis from 8 Sep 2012. I was within 50 feet of the tracks as 765 departed St Louis with an employee special in tow. Clear stack and diesels on the rear. I'm sure you are going to become active in SBRHS, run for elective office and fix the problem, aren't you?

Burlington John

Were you in the cab of the 3751 on these trips? Were you part of the over the road operating coordination between the Engineer on the 3751 and the Engineer of the Amtrak diesel? As to never doing anything without her "walker", the SBRHS complies with the requests of the sponsoring entity when it comes to the head end consist.

When she runs, it's for the appreciation of those who are thrilled by her performance. All others can find something else to do 3000 miles away, and they will not be missed during their absence.
