Somebody at Lionel took a "stupid pill" after which they came up with the "black bonnet".
No wonder Trainworld had to put these on sale.

SWChief had the explanation in this old thread: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,3288626

Evidently they decided to make the artist's mistake a reality.

I wouldn't choose to buy this, but I think it looks kind of cool.

I believe the first year that Lionel offered the F-3's, in 1948, the illustration in the catalog showed them in a dark shadow which made the silver finish look charcoal gray. So, in the 1960's and later, the crazies started to wonder if Lionel had ever made the SF units in that paint scheme. Fast forward to present day, when Lionel can't even think of what to do next, and the idea of actually building the mythical "black" SF F-3's came to life. So, all of the crazies who buy this new crapola made in China, can stuff one more "mint sealed" carton in their basement, hoping that it will increase in value before they die. Note to anyone from someone who knows: IT WON'T!

The execution of the war bonnet is rather poor on the model, but the colors are striking and might have received a more favorable assessment on a properly painted prototype.

Consider that, or something close to it, as the SP/SF merger scheme, instead of the thing they came up with. I think it would have been a much better choice, especially if SP started running them through some tunnels.

The first ones to ACTUALLY produce the Red and Black Santa Fe F3's and matching passenger cars (in the late 1990's or early 2000's) was K-Line, a company that infringed Lionel's copyright on their version of "command control", and declared bankruptcy as a result. Lionel acquired their tooling as part of the settlement.

Darn, I always get into the thread too late for folks to appreciate my pearls of humor.
