Nostalgia & History > Rock varnish, same spot as my MILW post yesterdayDate: 10/24/14 08:01 Rock varnish, same spot as my MILW post yesterday Author: valmont Well the cars don't have that 'varnish' look ... that's Rock #409 leading, taken from almost the exact location as the MILW BLW/ALCO/BLW shot I posted yesterday. Yes, Bruce Black got two trains from this vantage point on Mar. 22, 1964.
Any idea what train this was? Date: 10/24/14 08:12 Re: Rock varnish, same spot as my MILW post yesterday Author: wabash2800 Another great photo! Thanks for sharing!

I thought the Twin Star Rocket came into town after dark. Isn't this the Kansas City Rocket? Or maybe the Zephyr Rocket? Best regards, Rob L. the Engine crew worked out of Manly but the Train crew worked out of Cedar Rapids. zr190 Date: 10/24/14 18:07 Re: Rock varnish, same spot as my MILW post yesterday Author: mns019 My guess is that this is the Kansas City train, my reasoning is that the KC train regularly handled mail storage cars on the head end, the St. Louis train did not. Also seems like you had a 50-50 chance of seeing a CBQ E on the Zephyr Rocket. My father was an RPO clerk on the Zephyr Rocket (RPO crews changed at Burlington) to the end....I rode this train often and usually got a cab ride from St. Paul to Mpls.
