Toto Tuesday: Something Other than the Dink
Author: PRose

For many years, the only trains that ran on UP's McPherson Branch in central Kansas were Locals 181-182. They were usually short
trains, normally 10 cars or less. We called them the "Dink".
For a short period in 1986, the Santa Fe had temporary trackage rights on the UP McPherson Branch from Salina to Newton, KS.

Here is Santa Fe LMI-02 southbound on the McPherson Branch, south of Mentor, KS.

Definitely NOT the Dink.

October 4, 1986.

Thanks for looking.

Nice piece of rare Middle Division history! I worked that "line" a couple of times, but only over the old Mop portion between Sand Creek (Newton) & McPherson. It was my first experience with track warrant control.

Looks like the lead locomotive has been renumbered and given red number boards in preparation for the SPSF merger. Great photo and story, thanks for sharing!

Great scene and you also caught that lead GP39-2 that was very briefly renumbered for the failed SPSF merger, complete with those short lived red number boards!
