Nostalgia & History > Toto Tuesday: Something Other than the DinkDate: 11/25/14 09:35 Toto Tuesday: Something Other than the Dink Author: PRose For many years, the only trains that ran on UP's McPherson Branch in central Kansas were Locals 181-182. They were usually short
trains, normally 10 cars or less. We called them the "Dink". For a short period in 1986, the Santa Fe had temporary trackage rights on the UP McPherson Branch from Salina to Newton, KS. Here is Santa Fe LMI-02 southbound on the McPherson Branch, south of Mentor, KS. Definitely NOT the Dink. October 4, 1986. Thanks for looking. I worked that "line" a couple of times, but only over the old Mop portion between Sand Creek (Newton) & McPherson. It was my first experience with track warrant control.
