Were the Seaboard's FT's delivered with semi-permanently coupled drawbars? If so how long did they run that way?

http://www.trainweb.org/seaboard/salfta.htm says the 4010 was retired in 1963. Based on how weather-beaten its nose looks, I'm guessing that this photo was taken in the latter half of its life.

Nice Pic Uncle Joe! Most SAL freight units had two MU connections high up - here on the nose. What was the purpose of the two connections and why were they up there instead of on the pilot with the other MU's?
