Nope, not Doyle. Not if it is 1979.

Looks more like somewhere in Oregon.

I agree. Juxtaposition of road and town with the railroad looks right. Anyway, it's not Oregon.

Yes, Alpha-Beta was a low-cost grocery store chain operating in California and extending across the southwest into Texas and Arkansas. Alpha-Beta had a distribution center in Salt Lake City and its trailers were familiar sights on UP van trains to LA as well as on WP trains to Nor Cal.

Alpha-Beta was bought by American Stores in 1979, and American then bought Jewel Stores in 1984. This changed the distribution patterns and Salt Lake City no longer made sense as a main distribution point. So the Alpha-Beta trailers disappeared from the rails.

The Alpha-Beta stores in Arizona were bought by local management in 1989 and became ABCO stores.

In 1991 all the Alpha-Beta stores from New Mexico across to Arkansas were re-branded as Jewel, and within a year most of those stores became Albertsons.

The Alpha-Beta stores in Southern California became Ralph's, while the Alpha-Beta stores in Northern California became Lucky's and then Albertsons and then Lucky's again.

Best regards,

Rob L.

Hello Jim,

I don't have photos, but can give you a good idea of the types of trailers on the train, from UP train lists from that time period. You may be able to start with that info then search for individual photos of each trailer type. Let me know if that would be helpful and I'll see if I can get the info posted for you.

Take care,

Mark

I remember a group of AB trailers on a Rio Grande train headed West from Helper, UT! Entrained right ahead fo the caboose, possibly for fast interchange to the UP at Provo or SLC. Seem to recall them coming out of the meat packing plant in Peublo, CO.
