Whose Is This Crane
Author: MartyBernard

I took this from the overlook of the North Yard in Roanoke on December 6, 2012. The boom car is labeled NW 527665 and looks like it was painted in recent memory. The crane itself looks like a derelict derrick with no legible markings, but a new [painted?] muffler. Is this the NS's? Or does it belong to the local NRHS Chapter? Is it operable?

Thanks for any info,
Marty Bernard

I'm willing to bet that newly painted muffler is a propane tank at the business across the way - not part of this derrick. And the derrick was originally owned by N&W.

In the photo, you can see Ampro Industrial Tools sign on a building in the top right. I looked up the address (business was listed as closed) at 105 14th St NW, Roanoke, VA, and was able to see something that might be a propane tank within the NS property. Take a look.

Street view on Bing Maps shows this silver tank as one of two tanks, which are stacked on top of each other. I'm no expert, but it looks like natural gas tanks.

Between my picture and the rrpicturearchives.net picture it hadn't moved in a year and a half.

I agree it's not a muffler.

The Roanoke NRHS does not list its rolling stock on its web site.

I'm not positive there is anything inside it.
You can see the far windows from the front windows and door.
I can't tell what that white smudge is on the upper left of the rear door or door opening.
It might be a mark on something inside, or some light pattern from the far side.

According to their roster, the Virginia Transportation Museum owns an ex-NS derrick #514925.
I think they store some equipment off-site. Do you think this might belong to them?
