Nostalgia & History > "Palm Trees on the Railroad" (re-visited)Date: 01/24/15 08:53 "Palm Trees on the Railroad" (re-visited) Author: KeyRouteKen Hi Everybody--
Back in 2008 we ran a special feature regarding "Palm Trees on the Railroad"... It can be found here and was well received... http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,1584675,page=1 Here are a couple of other places, the second item has been addressed before: Photo 1. The old "Santa Fe" depot in Oakland/Emeryville ... a. A color postcard view. Photo 2. The famous Palms of the Key System at 12th & Union Streets--Oakland-- across from the old Shredded Wheat plant. Note: Bet a lot of you didn't know that the Santa Fe had such a fancy depot in Oakland long ago, did you ? Cheers. KRK Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/24/15 08:54 by KeyRouteKen. In the background was a palm tree. It was beyond the east end of the siding next to where the helper pocket track once was. I was told by an old Santa Fe employee that would have been near the old bungalow that controlled the ventilation system in the tunnel. I have a better photo, but it is controlled by another user. Take my word for it, please. There were two giant palms of the "Key System"--"SP" variety immediately behind the Oakland depot. Ok? Looks like the postcard people may have employed a bit of artistic license on the tree closest to the depot: http://www.cable-car-guy.com/images/blog/2011/oakland_sanafe_depot_40th_san_pablo_pge.jpg |
