SD80MAC's in DC
Author: RFandPFan

RDG630's post below inspired me to post some photos from March, 2002. Former Conrail SD80MAC's are parked at Benning Yard in DC waiting for their next coal train run down the Pope's Creek Branch.

I wonder if the RR's, given the Tier 4 restrictions now, wish they had bought more SD-80MAC's, vs. the SD-90 disasters? A proven engine design, good HP for higher speed service, AC option available. Gotta wonder.

the 80MACs were/are my favorite 2nd, 3rd, 4th veneration locomotives of all time ...

i posted this a few times before:

"I'll tell you what ... one of the first NS 66Ws on a loaded 120 car crude oil train going to Eddystone,Pa had an SD80MAC in the lead of a 2 unit consist ... when asked about the power handling the train the engineer remarked on the radio that the 80MAC unit was a beast and just wanted to keep on pullin ... no wheel slip whatsoever ... he said he'd take that unit in a consist anytime"

As nice as the pictures are, it is always sad to see former Pennsy stripped of the catenary.
