Vacation 1993...pt 2
Author: biff

Here's part two of my July 1993 Midwest vacation trip. This video will show a couple more trains at Porter Indiana, then moving to the IC around Gilman Illinois. The last part was taken on the joint UP-CSX line that runs south from Dolton Illinois to Woodland Junction where the two lines split. One CSX train is seen at Watseka and the final trains are at Woodland Jct.

Great variety!

The common horn on Conrail was the Leslie S3. 6966 with the first train somehow ended up with a nice sounding old casting
Nathan P5 horn. Perhaps this locomotive was from Rock Island heritage?

Once again you wow us with a lot of great catches. An unrepainted ex-BN SD40-2
leading with a bunch of ex-(??)Amtrak GP40's? And while I'm not a big UP guy,
a GP40X leading two ex-MP GP50's pn the first UP train, and two Soo's SD60/SD60M
as sole power on the second. What in the world were they doing there???

Thanks so much for posting.

The Soo Line train was operating by trackage rights over L&N (CSX) the former Milwaukee Road route to-from Evansville Indiana, correct?

The SOO train was heading down the UP toward St. Louis. I was told by another fan it was a detouring train bound for KC. In the summer of 1993 there was a major flooding problem in the Midwest causing many detours.

Great scenes once again, Thanks so much for posting! Also dig the sound of those non-turbocharged IC GP-38's.

Thanks for this. I knew it wasn't a trackage rights train
as it was on the wrong track. It would have taken the CSX for
that. It had to be a KC train, but this is one h*** of a detour.

Notice the badly damaged switch engine front end in the IC train at video minute 3.20. Thanks for clarifying the Soo train route.
