Wichita track chart circa 1964
Author: Orient

Wichita is a bit significant to me. While I find very few pictures of the past, especially out west, I've managed to come up with this little bit of fun for everyone here. I know my pictures could be better. Need better lighting on it. But the entire map is probably 15 ft long. I'm only including a few pictures of it here. Someday I need to take it to Kinko's and get it scanned properly. This is from 1964 and is from the MOP crossover on the north end down to Harry Street, the end of double track. Enjoy...

Kudos, company maps are always good to have and fascinating to view especially comparing against other maps of the same subject area be it ICC, Google, Delorean or the specific company's system map.
Apropos to your moniker, was the original far north end KCM&O trackage still extant in these maps, or were they off the survey so to speak?
Pardon my ignorance but all of my Orient Line focus to date has been on the southern end in Tex, OK and Mexico and the north end is kind of an enigma.

This actually extends all the way to the industrial park at Wassell street. I'm really upset that it doesn't extend into the Wichita North yard. While I have another map of the KCM&O West shops as they were originally laid, I think I'll wait for that to upload at a later date. Also, my last gem is a track chart from Harper KS showing the KCM&O connection and all yard tracks, not sure of the date on it though.

Great! I'll look forward to it, the KCM&O is like "cat-nip" for me. I've been saving up for that McCall book, but the fund get's hit over and over from one house repair disaster to the next.

Man, I was just down there yesterday! All of that trackage heading south out of South Jct. looks like a mess.

In other news, we had dinner at the River City Brewery in Old Town and I was thrilled to order their Rock Island Red.

I miss railroading being a service. Browsing a train trip through Wichita with the Barriger collection, there's quite a bit of changes. When I stumbled across these pictures I was just floored and sat staring at them for what seemed like forever. Ha! I don't think I can post the pics here, but here's the links starting at Lincoln street. Interesting about that picture, it must be in the late 30's or 40's as the track to the far right is seen crossing in front of the tower in the second picture and crossing the CRI&P to get over towards the original ATSF tracks that went west from Orme Street towards Pratt. It's pretty difficult to see in the picture but according to my posted 10th pic, where south junction is located it appears that the KCM&O at one time crossed over the ATSF Main with a diamond and continued east on the SLSF. That can also be seen in the second picture (1210576). I've been scratching my head on that, but it's the best assumption I can make. Now if only someone could cough up a map from the 30's or 40's and we'll have that answered. Any takers? :)

A couple of the curiosities I have had satisfied is in the last picture of the top end of Wichita. For one, Main 2 didn't start till signal 2091 which is right in front of the yard office today. Also, there is a gap between the yard lead and the lead towards love box at the top end (towards the east), I've always wondered about the spacing of that (having walked between those switches too many times to count), and lo and behold there used to be a crossover to the yard there.

I'm thinking that crossover was still there when I was switching @ N Wichita in the late '70s ~ early '80s.

Hi to orient and Atlpete,

Have you ever visited with Don Eberhert (spelling?), the former W.U.T. tower operator? He should be able to tell you the answer to most of your questions. I hope to visit with you after the spring gets warmer. I may be able to tell you more Orient stories, as my father-in-law was working with Orris Bilger and my wife's grandfather, O.M. Lemon, was the KCM&O's Storekeeper. wag216

Wow what a great discussion, as a native Wichitan (and still here) I am intrigued by anything and everything from my home town. Those Barriger images sure do show a lot has changed, I have studied the DeLorme (sp) maps and you can see a lot has been reconfigured over the years. The last straw was the building of the elevated tracks all the way from 17th Street south to link up with the former elevated tracks over Douglas, etc. in downtown.

If you ever have an opportunity to scan and create copies of those maps of Wichita trackage (including the West Wichita / Orient yards) I would pay for copies. The West Wichita shops still existed when I was a boy but by the time I had a car and a camera they were long gone. You can still see an old entrance on the north side of the yard hidden in the overgrowth but that's about all that is left.

Would be great to hear from Don Eberhardt, he was our local hobby shop proprietor when I was a kid and he is a great guy. Didn't know he was a former tower operator for the WUT.

Guys, please contact me at kansasrailfan@cox.net if you have anything else you wish to share. This discussion is like gold to me.

Dan

Don is still around. I see him at the grocery store occasionally. He worked the tower at south junction.
