Nostalgia & History > Maroon Monday: subversion amongst usDate: 03/02/15 06:36 Maroon Monday: subversion amongst us Author: santafe199 Once it became common knowledge that the Rock Island’s days were more or less numbered I think a lot of us started looking at foreign power on the Rock’s main lines in a little bit different light. Of course, CRI&P and SP/SSW power had been ‘joined at the hip’ for years hauling both passenger & freight traffic together. But seeing Espee & Cotton Belt power in our neck-o-the-woods (Armourdale, Topeka, Herington & Wichita, etc) in the months prior to the bitter end became different. It was getting harder & harder to just write off as normal when we all knew what was coming.
1. CRI&P 386 & SP 8744 sit on adjacent tracks at the roundhouse in Herington, KS on November 9, 1978. In just 16 months the Rock Island will be lost to history… Thanks for looking back!
