Maroon Monday: subversion amongst us
Author: santafe199

Once it became common knowledge that the Rock Island’s days were more or less numbered I think a lot of us started looking at foreign power on the Rock’s main lines in a little bit different light. Of course, CRI&P and SP/SSW power had been ‘joined at the hip’ for years hauling both passenger & freight traffic together. But seeing Espee & Cotton Belt power in our neck-o-the-woods (Armourdale, Topeka, Herington & Wichita, etc) in the months prior to the bitter end became different. It was getting harder & harder to just write off as normal when we all knew what was coming.

1. CRI&P 386 & SP 8744 sit on adjacent tracks at the roundhouse in Herington, KS on November 9, 1978. In just 16 months the Rock Island will be lost to history…

Thanks for looking back!

Thanks again Lance for your continued support of this theme for Monday.
The Rock was my training ground for working on the UP.

Actually, it should read submersion... There is a U-Boat among us. These units had interesting horn that went "ahooooga." Crossings made for some interesting sounds.

Most old railroaders go by "A waist is a terrible thing to mind." Today I saw a man in a BNSF Hazmat vest that made me look tiny!
