Warbonnet in Galveston

My uncle took these last week in Galveston and I thought they were worth sharing. What is the history of this locomotive? At least she is dressed in the greatest paint scheme of all time for retirement!!

This locomotive started life as SP 6443, and later worked for the Wellsville Addison & Galeton, PATrain, and ConnDOT before going to the museum in Galveston. Lots of SP fans cried foul when this unit and its sister 316 (which started out on SP subsidiary T&NO and followed a similar career path to Galveston) were painted in Santa Fe colors:

Kudos to the Galveston Museum!! Those units look Gorgeous!!

My hat is also off to Doyle too for doing such a beautiful job with his (ex ATSF Warbonnet) NKP painted PA! It too is drop dead gorgeous!!

These guys put their money where their mouth is, and put their sweat and labor (of love) into them, with astounding results.

My absolute favorite railroad for which I have a deep passion is the friendly SP, from cab forwards to tunnel motors, from the Siskyous to Donner to Tehachapi to Beaumont and beyond. From Black Widows to Tiger stripes to Bloody noses. From Judah to the big four to DJ to even Biaginni and Krebs. From Steinheimer to Signor. To my heart, it's a railroad beyond compare!

NONETHELESS, my kudos to both the Galveston folks and to Doyle. You guys took the time and made the efforts, and you deserve and have gotten your just rewards with these units set up in a fashion that appeals deeply to your hearts. They are so beautiful, I must admit they even appeal to my SP Black Widowed heart and Bloodied nose. You get no quarrel from me.

Greg

Even tough I'm a SP fan, I understand why they painted the locoomotives in Santa Fe colors. They are sitting in front of a Santa Fe station and the warbonnet paint scheme is probably the most famous of all the F-unit paint schemes. A couple of things I'm surprised about is that they left the ditch lights on and didn't move the horn(s) back to the roof of the cab. I think those were PA transit changes. The jumper cable boxes don't fit either. These would have been fairly easy changes to remove before it was painted.
But the unit looks good and is preserved. Maybe 10 or 20 years from now they will be redone as SP units. It's just paint.

I hope they don't get caught in a hurricane like the last ex-SP F-Units that were stored there was.

I wish people wouldn't consider the Galveston facility a museum, what with painting ex-SP units as ATSF (aka, they never existed as such) and allowing so much damage to other equipment. It's more like an amusement park.

As much as I HATE those F units....they did not cause the damage to their equipment. That would be hurricane Ike buddy.

Provisions are in place to move the equipment off the island in the event of another hurricane.
