Hanging Rock Near Danville, PA
Author: BaltoJoey

Reading Flynn's post about the Hanging Rock
excursion, reminded me of a photo I saw at the
Library Of Congress' web site.

There is (was?) a Hanging Rock alongside Conrail's
Port Road Branch and the Susquehanna River near
Danville, PA.

If you look closely atBaltoJoey’s picture you will notice next to the train a carriage with two black
horses.  There is a second picture on theLibrary of Congress website in which the train has passed and the carriage with
the two black horses is under the hanging rock.

Danville is NOT on the Port Road branch. Danville is on the upper Susquehanna River and this is the track between Northumberland and Wilkes-Barre, Pa. If it is on the Danville side of the river this would be Lackawanna track. But since it says "near" it could be on the former PRR line on the other side of the river.

This photo location looks like the Reading running south bound along the Susquehanna River, just North of Shamokin Dam PA. When the water level is low, you can still see where the canal was, shown in the photo. The hill on the far right is Sunbury RD, looking close at the base of the hill you can make out a truss bridge, that is the PRR crossing of the same river. This area today is PA route 11, the Reading crossed the river not to much farther south of the photo location, the Reading than crossed the PRR at a diamond.

I would wager those lads are 10-12 years of age.

PS: to LV - Oops, I named the wrong RR, so sue me!

PPS: At one time the PA DOT wanted to demolish that
rock. But many people raised a fuss because George
Washington used that road. When he escaped from the
British and traveled to Valley Forge. Hanging Rock is
now on the Historical Places list.
