30s, 35s, and 40s meet at Summit, 1980
Author: trainjunkie

Once a common (dare I say boring) sight in Southern California, a westbound UP manifest with SD40s and 40-2s holds the south main, tipping over Cajon Summit, as an eastbound Santa Fe manifest holds back at the A-signal on the north main. Once Uncle Pete is in the clear, GP30 No. 3220, leading a group of its 30 and 35 "bell ringer" brethren, takes a diverging-clear, crossing over from the north to south main, heads down the hill past the occupied set-out track at Summit, then blasts into the desert for Barstow. I was a mere 16-years old on this January day in 1980 and had no idea that nine years later I would find myself riding these same rails in service for Uncle Pete.
