Along the B&OCT Part 9 - Back to Seventyfive
Author: Englewood

These pictures were probably taken either the day before or the day after the ones posted in Part 8.  I
managed to capture another IC detour on the B&OCT.  Sometime during the summer of 1969......

1. The eastbound Capitol Limited.

2. A northbound IC train detouring on the B&OCT.  In the background is a PC heading east on the Panhandle.

3. A northbound IC train on the BRC.

4. A southbound IC on the BRC.

5. The pride of the fleet, N&W 121, the "Blue Bird", southbound on the old Wabash.
The Official Guide lists the consist as:
Reclining Seat Coaches...St. Louis and Chicago
Dining Car-Cocktail Lounge...Decatur and Chicago

I apologize for not cutting down the telephone poles that ruin the picture.
My main reason for posting is that this shot gives a good look at the all the diamonds
in place at the time.

6. Clearing bound Rock Island delivery, northbound on the BRC

How sweet it was!  Great to see 75th Street with ALL the diamonds in place and in use, and the pipeline-controlled semaphore signals.  I never saw F's on the PRR there and the photo of them with the tower is too much.  Thanks for all the great shots and hope this series never ends.

What is the exact location? I'm guessing 75th St. - Forest Hill. Neat photos. Still kinda overgrown there...

Fantastic views.  75th Street/Forest Hill was one of Chicago's best junctions for variety and frequency the days when all the roads were there.

Yes just north of Forrest Hill.  There are still pipes, rods and a high stand signal mast in the weeds on the east side of the PRR ROW right before the NS tracks.
It is very nice to see how Chicago looked back in the day! I travel these lines almost daily and I always wonder why and how thing used to be!  I wish someone would write a book just on the B&OCT with lots maps and pictures!!

The black IC geep, #9201, is one of 4 torpedo-tube passenger GP-9s equipped with higher-speed gearing.  It and it's three sisters (9200-9203) were regulars on the IC Iowa Division passenger trains (Hawkeye and Land O' Corn).    And in this photo 9201 is now relegated to a Chicago terminal transfer run.    Such is life...

If it is any consolation, it is not on a normal transfer run.
For some reason the IC was detouring pig trains over the B&OCT.
So at least it is on a high priority main line train.

I just noticed the same set of power is on the detouring IC pig train and the southbound IC train on the BRC.  I did not date the pictures when taken so there must be
two or more days worth of photos here.
