ShastaDaylight Date: 05/04/15 10:38 Re: SP Beet Train Works Sargent Author: Out_Of_Service did most beet load locations have portable loaders to load a whole cut of cars at once and get picked up or did they have stationary loaders with cars having to be spotted ...
were the beet loaders larger enough to load whole trains or were there a bunch of smaller loadouts that were used to make up whole trains ... did the loadouts shift the cars to spot for loading or did they rely on the railroad to have to spot the cars ... thankX Posted from Android Date: 05/04/15 11:09 Re: SP Beet Train Works Sargent Author: TCnR IIRC that would be the loader at Sargent (Oops, just saw the title), with hiway 101 being the overpass structures. The beet loader has been modeled a number of times and there may be articles out there, pretty sure there's some model photos in collections on PBase.
There may also be some earlier posts in the TO archives using 'Sargent beet' or similar. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/04/15 12:59 by TCnR. Date: 05/04/15 12:25 Re: SP Beet Train Works Sargent Author: WAF Beet dumps in California were set up to load strings of cars without additional daily switches. As the cars are loaded, they are pulled by a winch and then a tractor will drag the car down to the end of the spur to the other loaded cars. The daily Turn will come by and pull loads and spot empties. usually a dump will load between 10-20 cars a day. Union Sugar had dumpos at Sargent, Cooper, north of Salinas, Campora south of salinas, Elsa north of King City, San Ardo, south of King City. Cal-P had 3 dumps between Suisun and Sacramento, West Side Branch in the san Joaquin Valley had several, Many more between Fresno and Bakersfield

They used to use it to set out bad order and maintenece of way cars, but not anymore.
