Lancaster Oxford & Southern Motor No.3 at Strasburg
Author: JimBaker

This photo just came into my collection. No date was indicated on the print.
The car was originally 3 foot narrow gauge and is run at Strasburg ocassionally.
Were the trucks rebuilt to standard gauge or what was replaced tyo all allow use at Strasburg?
I presume to motor is in the 'back' end shown here,
Any further details or info would be appreciated.

I saw this "one-off" car when we visited Strasburg in 1990.  It looks like the sort of creation that would draw comments of "there's a prototype for anything" if someone showed up at a model railroad club with a scaled-down version Old No. 3.  According to "The Short Line Doodlebug" by Edmund Keilty, the original car body was built by Jackson & Sharp in 1889, and the L. O. & S. modified it into a motor car in 1913.  It was sold to the Grasse River RR in New York in 1918, then went to Wolfeboro RR, and finally wound up at Strasburg.  Apparently Grasse River was the outfit that converted it to standard gauge.
