SP 4213 Cab Forward - Locaiton needed
Author: CrudPunko

I just finished scanning over 100 slides for a friend and many of those slides lack basic information such as date or location. Here are two of those images that I cannot confirm a location for:

First up is this is a Tom Gildersleeve dupe slide of SP cab forward 4213 which has no date or place. It looks a lot like Sacramento to me. Anyone have more than a guess as to where this is?

Next up is another dupe, this one of SP SD7 2741 with a short passenger train. There's no train number - just the engine number. Is this an extra? This looks a little like Stockton but I don't remember seeing an overhang like the one in the photo. This must be after the 1965 renumbering as the unit is wearing its post-1965 number. Any ideas on this?

Thanks In Advance

(I have several more like these that I will be posting over the next few days ...)

I say Bakersfield on the SP 4213 and Stockton for sure on the SD.

SP 2741 was relief power on the Sacramento Daylight during mid-1967, most likely at the time the regular power, GP9 3422, was being repainted into Scarlet & Gray and being "properly" renumbered into the passenger series as SP 3010. I have it recorded on a consist slightly different than this one on April 24, 1967.

I'd say that pretty much suggests a date window for the Stockton photo, since Geep 3422-3010 was the regular power on Trains 53-54 for the greater part of the 1960s, and SD7 2741 was its frequent backup. With the unit running only an Extra (engine) number and not train numbers, this suggests a time after July 1967 when the train numbers were suspended.

Did Bakersfield have a dwarf signal?

The shot of AC 4213 is at Bakersfield abut 1950 as the f-3's were bumping the AC's as the road power, but had a hard time matching the Ac's as a result, the F-3's departed and the AC's were back in business....

That's definitely Bakersfield.  Bakersfield had (and still has?) several dwarf signals between Kern Jct. and Baker St.  That's the old "carpentry shop" (car shop) on the left that was torn down when the "launching pad" fueling facility was built in the late '50s or early '60.

Elvis to Lathrop was CTC only engine numbers were used. At Stockton we got our orders and changed to indecator boards to the train number or Xtra or section going East bound. Don't remember going West what we did. To many miles under the belt.

Wherever 4213 is, that's a great shot!  Facing off the stinking invaders.

I have to agree with Tom and Dave about Bakersfield on the 4213.

Bob, this would be after June 26, 1967

Ken,

The Stockton depot overhang is still there too. I used it as a sort of sunshade last week shooting a Northbound at mid day. Lots of trackwork in that area to create a double ended depot track and a new CP, SP984 ACE.

And with the 10-3-67 date for the SP 2741 shot, I should amend to say that I believe this was very likely during the repaint & renumbering window for the normally-assigned GP9. When I saw the unit subbing in April of that year, I believe SP 3422 still came back from Shops in Black Widow paint with its incorrect freight-series number.

Well written, Frisco
Reminds me of the opening scene of "Gunsmoke."

The first photo was taken at Bakersfield by Jack Woods in February 1949 (apparently, the original slide is in Tom Gildersleeve's collection).

AC 4213 in the ditch .   I don't know the where or when, my dad gave me some pictures of the wreck when I was a  kid and he worked out of the Bakersfield office of the SP in the early forties, I think. I presume Soledad Canyon. I have a few more pictures of this event if anyone is interested.
