Rock Island Ballast

Here is a GM&O RS-1 delivering the ballast to the Rock Island in Joliet, IL.Note the great condition of the Rock Island yard trackage. This ballast came from the Vulcan Gravel pit in South Joliet off the GM&O mainline.

Yeah, the Rock Island needed all the ballast they could get.

Bob, was this another load of that "self-tamping" ballast the RI and ICG were so fond of? LOL

Just dump it up to the top of the rail head and let the trains pack it in....

Interestingly, the UP still uses a number of these cars, most all of which are still in RI paint.  Here are a few that I shot earlier this year in Topeka, KS.
