How many times have you thought "It will always be there?" This is B&O 4009 westbound on the Chessie System at Manchester, Ohio on 05/03/1980. Today this is the single track CSX mainline between CSX LAMBERT in southwest Akron, Ohio and CSX WARWICK. The B&O, Chessie System, 4009 with its two different numberboards, the pole line, the day 05/03/1980,  and even the name Manchester (now New Franklin) are gone. Thankfully this image is here is to remember this moment.

I too look back at things that i should have shot,but never did,because i thought it would always be there.i really miss that paint scheme.i miss the sound af those GP40,s too.Sure would be great to see 4009 again .

Great image and story, Bob. 1980 was the first full year of recession, which saw Chessie and other roads parking older power into big storage lines, some never to run again. This of course was weighted toward older blue power, so it became harder to catch solid blue lashups seemingly overnight. Unless you were in the coalfields. Even then, we thought those GP40'S would be around forever.... (and many are, toiling for shortlines or regionals....but certainly not wearing those elegant capitol domes).

Bob, Nice shot. I got to see the B&O Blue in Rutherford Pa on the RDG back in the mid 70's and early 80's. Always loved going over there.  Thanks for sharing.  Ben
