1) In 1985 the Katy's St. Louis Line suffered major wash outs.  Here we see a ballast train heading east by the Katy's grand old station at Sedalia, MO to try and get the line open again.
The headlight in the distance is Parsons, KS to St. Louis freight No. 102.

2) No. 102 has just changed crews and received a Mop Pilot as it will run over the Mop from Sedalia to St. Louis.  The Katy east crew has deadheaded from the normal crew change point of New Franklin, MO on the Katy to Sedalia for the run east. 


3) Taking a hard right to access the Mop Main,  the rear of No. 102 rolls by the last Katy structure it will encounter before St. Louis.

Three views of the two Katy stations at Sedalia, taken several years later after the line to St. Louis had been abandoned in favor of trackage rights to St. Louis over the UP (ex-MP) Sedalia-St. Louis.

I'm trying to figure out what manner of device is mounted on the pole opposite the boxcar Sedalia version.
Both Bob's and Art's pictures show it. Great pictures of an area off the beaten railfan path. Thanks

You think of the wide open spaces like the Santa Fe across Arizona and being long
distances between anything but we'd drive the road next to the ex-Katy line between
North of Jeff City and the turn off to Hermann and go for miles and miles without
seeing any reason for a railroad. It was like the ex-Rock line South of there, not much
traffic between the big places.

I believe those are actually CPL train order lights.

no ... just color light pot signals on an extended pedastal used as TO signals ...

What a great string of photos, I was in railfanning the area two years ago and had no idea MKT did a reroute east of there, most appreciated!!!

Great looks back Bob. I remember some of those boxcar depots. That certainly would be a great line to railfan today if it was still around.

I have to agree and Brian sums it up best. This was one of those lines I was always "gonna go shoot, someday", but failed. Oh, those forever-lost opportunities...
