Nostalgia & History > Busy afternoonDate: 08/26/15 09:54 Busy afternoon Author: BillMarvel Burlington’s 23rd Street engine terminal in Denver is a busy place on this February afternoon in 1965, with E8A units for the Denver Zephyr and California Zephyr and, at right, an E7A for the night train to Casper, all needing attention before they move down to Denver Union Station. In the background, S-2 9307, one of a fleet of Alco switchers working Denver’s 38th Street, is just in from a transfer run to Rio Grande’s North Yard and awaits its next assignment.

It was still running in the spring of 1967, for sure; my folks and I were living in the married-students' housing complex near the CSU campus in Fort Collins, circa 1966-1967. I had a Denver Post paper-route, and while delivering the Sunday morning edition, the SB "Nightcrawler" would be leaving (what-was-then!) the south end of town towards Denver. It could be easily seen (and, almost-as-important, HEARD) from our 'front porch'. Pat from Littleton, Colorado |
