Nostalgia & History > Sleeper Saturday: UP Inland EmpireDate: 02/06/16 01:56 Sleeper Saturday: UP Inland Empire Author: Rainier_Rails Like the slide of the Harvard Club I posted 2 weeks ago (link below), this is an original Kodachrome slide acquired from John Benson, of UP Pullman heavyweight sleeper Inland Empire in Council Bluffs on Saturday, October 27th, 1962.
The Inland Empire was built in 1930 in Lot #6358 to Plan #3973A as a 10 section-1 compartment-1 drawing room (10S-1C-1DR) sleeper, 1 of 13 such cars built in that Lot; cars were outshopped between May 16th and 29th. 4 cars were built for UP's Columbine, 4 (including the Inland Empire) were built for San Francisco-Spokane service over the SP and UP, 4 were built for NYC's Southwestern Limited, and 1 car was built for the general service pool. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, UP acquired the 4 Columbine cars and 3 of the 4 SF-Spokane cars, including the Inland Empire (the 4th was acquired by SP). Besides 1 car which was wrecked in 1950, the remaining 6 cars were withdrawn from Pullman lease between 1959 and 1962, 4 of these in 1962, including the Inland Empire, which was withdrawn on June 29th, along with Columbine car Balsam Fir. Of these 4, the Balsam Fir was rebuilt to dynamometer #210 and is still on the roster as UPP #210, and the other 3, including Inland Empire, were modified for the roadway (MofW) department in 1963-1964; in 1964, the Inland Empire became roadway bunk car #906036. In the early-to-mid-70's, these cars were retired from roadway service; the #906036 was retired in 1970.
