Great!  I boarded a train there in August 1968.  I didn't have a camera then.  Gerry

HISTORIC! What a slice-of-life this image conveys with the South Shore sign, the Hertz sign, the hotel, and most of all the street loading of the interurban!

And the trains don't run thru downtown there any more, correct? But there are plans to run in town service again but perhaps not down the city streets?

The LaSalle hotel closed in 1973. A developer hopes to restore the building for downtown living.

Corner of La Salle Avenue and Michigan Street.

The Ford Ranchero and even the mailbox are also classics; so much to look at here!

What a great photo!  So much history in one scene.  In addition to things already mentioned,
that DX gas station sign in the distance caught my eye; haven't seen that brand in ages.
Even the old style traffic signals are classic.  Any idea what that huge building way in the back
is, behind the DX sign?
Thanks for showing this real gem.

Tough times in South Bend at that time as the Studebaker plant closed the previous month, December 9, 1963.

The big building might be the La Salle hotel. There are plans to reopen it as upscale downtown housing.

The trains go to the South Bend airport now. It would be nice to see street running in SB again.
