I missed the steam era.  I missed the Alco diesel era.  GE tried to make it up to me.
July 1993, at the Rio Grande depot in Salt Lake City.

Well, the smoke is to be expected, as it appears that the mechanical department guy is attempting to start the engine. GE's were notorious for emitting clouds of black smoke in the start-up process, until the gasolene-coated gerbils inserted through the cylinder try-cocks were fully on fire. I hope that I'm not being too technical here.

Every time I see a layshaft lever I do it. I just don't see too many of them any more.
