WAG Wednesday: Hangin' at Porubsky's
Author: santafe199

Here’s an interesting surge of action at Porubsky’s Curve 45 years ago in Topeka, KS. Porubsky’s is in the “Little Russia” section of north Topeka (north of the Kansas River). Bill Gibson recorded these shots in early 1971. He didn’t indicate his total time spent here, but it could easily have been a mere 30 minutes, or even less. Like any good railfanning location Porubsky’s Curve in those days could be quiet for a long time, then spring into action with multiple trains on very short notice.

The same is true today, but the shooting menu is just a bit different…

1. UP 3633, SR 3094, SR 3045 & UP 3000 lead an eastbound manifest.

2. AT&SF 2769 has come north across the Kansas River and has hold of a string of transfer cars.

3. While the Santa Fe transfer job pauses UP 417 leads 132B & [U-50] 34 on a westbound manifest. (Only Uncle Pete… :^)

Bringing up the rear:

1. UP 25634 trails that eastbound manifest with an early slogan: “Safety is the Golden Rule in Action”.
Four photos by William A. Gibson (WAG) Sr in Topeka, KS on February 15, 1971.

Thanks for looking back!

I'll take one of everything on the menu!  Another amazing set of photos Lance!   Being in Southern Railway territory, I've gotta rate the UP SD45 in its original # with the Southern hi-nose SD35's as the pick of the litter.  And what a litter!

Gee!  what are the odds that MOP boxcar came into Topeka on the branch from Lomax?
Also those GP20's next to a U50?  Kind of like a 737 next to a 757 on the runway.

Art, I ve enjoyed seeing these images from 1971. Many changes in track and signal facilities from when I started taking slides there in the early 1990's.
More from here , please.   --Kelly M.

Wow, what great consists.  The caboose is a pleasure to see as well.  I don't remember very many slogan cabooses that were other than just Black lettering.  Thanks for showing these great moments.
