Many photos of D & H steam locomotives, some NYC steam locomotives and passenger trains and a few station photos. Vintage Albany, NY area photos Date: 05/25/16 09:35 Re: Vintage Albany, NY area railroad photos Author: hogheaded The former ALCO site is being developed into a hotel and casino?
This is indeed a remarkable series of photographs - with many of them being reminiscent of Jack Delano's works - that is fertile ground for anyone with an affinity towards moody B&W, non-3/4 shots (yeah there are roster shots also). A photo that intrigued me was the 1937 one depicting D&H 2-8-0 #1089 supplying power for an electric rail welder. I had no idea that RR's were field welding rails at that early date. Have a couple of brewskies on me, Dave! EO Date: 05/25/16 16:46 Re: Vintage Albany, NY area railroad photos Author: nycman Dave, thanks for posting that, my old stompin' grounds featured. That first pic of the Alco folks--they are posed alongside the fearsome New York Central's first 4-8-4, the 800, which featured no less than three different steam systems, the one with the highest pressure, 800 psi, which struck fear into the crew members. It wasn't very successful.

Love the European look, and spit polish on the D&H steam power. That was a characteristic of the Loree era. Date: 05/25/16 20:16 Re: Vintage Albany, NY area railroad photos Author: RuleG Thanks for your comments.
Albany was my old stomping grounds, too, during the mid- to late-1980s. Of course, nearly all of what is shown in the photos is gone now, except for Albany Union Station which was renovated to be reused as a bank. The bank moved out and the station building houses other functions. Not shown in the photos is the magnificent for D & H headquarters building which now is the administrative offices for the State University of New York. Here's a link to drawings and photographs of the D & H Building. D & H Building Date: 05/26/16 15:53 Re: Vintage Albany, NY area railroad photos Author: navarch2 I grew up there and left in 1974 for good.....but my dad worked for the Central and I hung out around trains for most of my youth....especially as a kid in Troy.
