That train was the ultimate class act.

The UP Directors were inspecting the WP before they bought it.  I hope you don't mind looking at a ABBA E-unit set because I have a few more of Roger's.

What ever happened to these units? It seems like the UP had a LOT of E-units up into the 80s, and now just a few.

I'd say 1 & 2 are in near vicinity to Pulga, and 6 is at Blairsden.  I want to say 3, 4, and 5 are at Niles.

Great photos.  UP always had a class looking passenger train--Roger caught them in wonderful settings.

UP retired 7 of the 8 units later in 1980.  A different management later reacquired the 949 and 963B from outside sources and along with 951 were
heavily rebuilt and enjoyed another run as leaders for business trains.  Now, the three seldom see use.

Actually, all 8 were retired, but #951 was retained and then reactivated in 1984. 6 of the other 7 that were retired were scrapped. #928 was "preserved" at the Western Heritage Museum in Omaha where it was heavily vandalized. The shell now sits on the ground at the steam shop in Cheyenne in very poor condition. Still grieves me that so many intact E-units from their original owner were scrapped rather than sent to museums, but in 1980, E8/9s were still relatively plentiful.

The 3 existing E-units are listed near the top of this roster: http://www.thedieselshop.us/UP.HTML

949 and 963B were not part of the original 8 that were retained by UP until 1980. They had been sold off previously.
