That's an unbelievable number of engines.   More than I would think would be required there even with that being a major shop.   Would that have been normal for Scranton at that time or is there a reason so many were present on that date?

Handwritten at bottom of photo is "during strike" which may account for the large number of locomotives in the yard.

That is a fascinating photo! Is there a larger version online somewhere? With a little more detail, I could study it for hours.

The 1877 railroad strike depicted here was the first general strike in U.S. history, a particularly bloody one which formally drew the line between industrial workers and the handful of powerful financiers who controlled the country and its economy.

The 1877 strike was a turning point for much of American labor.  Not just railroads, but miners, canal workers, grain elevator workers, dock workers, etc.  In much of the north and midwest, it was a general strike. In the south, the railroads were shut down, but there was less spill over to other industries..

The passenger cars appear to have air while the freight cars do not.
