Horse drawn carriages are commonly used these days in Pennsylvania, too. And once in a great while, a steam locomotive can be seen running over the viaduct. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Looks like about a 50-60 car train across the viaduct.  Was that typical 100 years ago - or when this photo may have been taken?

Interestingly, there appears to be a AM brodcast antenna on the roof. Those were typical for 500 to 1000 Watt stations. Does anyone know the story?

Thomas Taber's great DL&W trilogy mentions that the railroad had drawn plans for a monumental line on a viaduct across the valley in Scranton. This concrete structure would complement Nicholson, Tunkhannock, the New Jersey Cutoff, and the Boonton line as part of a low grade route for loaded trains.

The "Scranton improvement" fell victim to the first world war...
