Question on "Pins Cushions" Shenandoah Sleeper
Author: train1275

Back years ago George Pins was running ex PRR 120 and a C&O? sleeper "Shenandoah".

The "Shenandoah" was briefly on the Adirondack Railway operation from Utica to Lake Placid in 1980 and was sidelined by a derailment which cracked a brake rotor.

In 1981 it was moved off line by Conrail and does anyone know where it went ?

Is it still around today ?

Thanks for any information.

I had some time on my hands, hiding from the heat, seemed like a task to kill time.  Not so easy, last reference that is unconfirmed is on the NYS&W.  found areference in rrpicture's.

Sleeper lounge rebuilt from 10RM-6DB sleeper, built in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6864 to Plan #4167 as C&O #2655 CITY OF ATHENS, renamed in 1951 to CITY OF PETOSKEY (2nd), sold in 1957 to B&O as #7052 ( typo sb 7502)  SHENANDOAH, retired in 1971 and sold to George Pins, who renamed it KEYSTONE RAPIDS, later to NYS&W.

NYS&W - no direct reference located, still looking
Keystone rapids - no reference
Amtrak assigned number is 3521
B&O 7502
C&O 2501 I could reference, no reference to 2655

Thanks rdgrailfan for delving into this.

I worked for the ADK RR in 1980 and slept in the car one night in August 1980 while it was stored oos at Thendara, NY. Later I remember the Conrail crew bringing it into Utica, NY yard after the closing of the ADK operation. Never did know where it went though and have never been able to track it.

When we had it on the ADK the paint stripe was a forest green along with the name board background.

I rode in the car on the Montrealer to and from Montreal on a trip one February that Pins operated. We had the 120 with it. The car was still a 10 & 6
and still named "Shenandoah," seems that it was painted tuscan red above the stainless fluting. Sorry I can't tell you the year...late '70's.

The car is in Clifton Forge, VA in somewhat poor condition.

General This was the Sleeper "Shenandoah" last used by the Adirondack Railway in 1980 and still painted (never lettered) for them. Photos can be found here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1540026 and herehttp://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1539654. Originally C&O "City of Athens"
